What a great day (and week) we had! Students started the week with an outstanding performance from Theater Four called, "Benjamin Franklin and His Kite." Students learned about Benjamin Franklin's life and were able to ask the actors questions at the end of the show about how they prepared for their roles. This assembly was possible due to a grant and PTA funds. Thank you PTA!
The kindergarten classes made and sold trail mix also this week to raise money to help buy holiday gifts in December.
The week ended with the fierce competition between Team Ridder and Team Johnston. Students supported the teams by wearing team colors and cheering on the teachers who participated. It was very close, but Team Ridder pulled out a win after the last relay event! The overall score was 12 to 8. Team Johnston was gracious when the time came for the top fundraisers from each grade level to pour chilly water on them! Team Ridder even joined in on the fun and decided to sit with Team Johnston so both teams could receive a cool shower of water! The students and teachers had a blast! Pictures will be coming soon to the school website. We are very proud of the students for working so hard to raise $20,000 for the new playground. Plans and colors have been selected, and the playground is set to be installed over winter break.
On Monday, October 31, JWES will celebrate Red Ribbon Week by wearing PJs to school to represent choosing to follow our dreams and live drug free. On Wednesday, November 2, students are asked to wear red. Everyone will receive red ribbons that day. On Friday, November 4, students will receive stickers saying, "Smarties choose to be drug free" and will be given a special treat at lunch. We are excited to participate in Red Ribbon Week!
The PTA Board meeting will be on November 3, at 6:30 PM in the library.
Just a reminder that if you have a transportation change for your student, please call or arrive at school by 2:45, to give the office staff plenty of time to make that request happen. Thank you for helping us make sure all students get home on time each day.
Just a reminder that November 7, is Parent Conference Day from 12:00-7:00 PM. Teachers sent home a sign-up sheet for parents to schedule a conference. Also, November 8, is a Teacher Inservice Day. There will be no school for students on both days.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Today is the day that the students have been waiting for. Because the students raised enough money from the Fun Run, Team Ridder will compete against Team Johnston in several events. The losing team will have icy cold water poured on their heads by the students from each grade level that raised the most money.
We are now at the end of the first nine weeks of school! Students will not have school on Monday, October 24, due to a Teacher Workday. Students will return to school on Tuesday, October 25. Enjoy the long weekend!
This week, fourth grade had a beautiful day on Monday for their field trip to Brethren Woods. Also, on Thursday, third graders were very excited to receive dictionaries with their names printed on the inside covers from the Bridgewater Rotary Club. Thank you to the Rotary Club members for such a wonderful gift for the third graders at JWES! The school also participated in the Great Southeast Shakeout Earthquake Drill on Thursday at 10:20. We practiced how to be safe if an earthquake occurred while we were in school. Everyone did a super job!
For next week, students will enjoy a Theater Four assembly on Tuesday (October 25) and Fall Picture make-up day will be on Thursday (October27) for those who were absent when pictures were taken earlier or who wish to have their picture retaken.
The PAC meeting will be Thursday, October 27, at 6:30 PM in the library. Childcare is provided. Steve Reid, RCPS Director of Maintenance, will be here to show the plans for the renovation that will begin in May. Please plan to attend!
The Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) meeting has been changed from November 23, to November 16, at 1:00 PM at the RCPS central office.
If you would like to say thank you to a teacher who has impacted you or your child, you may nominate him or her for the Inspire Award. This award aims to recognize teachers who go above and beyond in the classroom. Parents, students, pre-service teachers, or classroom volunteers may submit nominations. The nomination form can be found on the RCPS homepage under the "Parents/Students" tab.
Please see the message below regarding a survey about the new federal Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015:
The Virginia Department of Education is asking for feedback about Virginia's plan to implement the new federal Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015 (ESSA). ESSA replaces No Child Left Behind and provides states with flexibility to improve accountability systems, assessments, and overall approaches to school improvement. School accountability systems evaluate schools based on multiple factors and provide important information to school administrators, teachers, parents, and the community about school performance. The purpose of this survey is to identify those factors, also known as accountability indicators, which you think are important to know about schools. The survey is open to all stakeholders and is anonymous. Participants will not provide their names on the survey, and it will not be possible to match survey answers to participant identities. You may access the survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ESSAinVA. The survey takes 5-10 minutes to complete and will remain active until WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2016.
Also, there is a flyer attached about an opportunity to participate in Science Night at Bridgewater College on November 12.
I am excited to announce that the students did meet the Purdue Foundation match goal of $15,000 for the playground and are very close to the $20,000 goal overall! You can still send money in to the PTA. To celebrate, Ms. Johnston and I will compete with our selected teams against each other in several relay races on October 28, at 1:30! May the best team win (and not have to pour cold water over their heads)!
Enjoy the fall weather, and we will see everyone at school on Tuesday!
I cannot believe we are halfway through the month of October! This first nine weeks is flying and lots of great things are happening at JWES! This past week, first grade went to Back Home on the Farm, and third grade students experienced agriculture day at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds. We also had a very successful and fun Chick-fil-A Night on Wednesday! Students saw the baby Chick-fil-A cow during dismissal and got to greet a different Chick-fil-A cow that evening at the restaurant, in addition to eating some great food and playing a game for some cool prizes! Our next Chick-fil-A Night is February 8, so mark your calendars. We are even going to add a third night in May since many expressed that they really enjoyed the evening!
We also came to school dressed differently this week in order to celebrate National School Lunch week. We enjoyed showing our team spirit and being a superhero for the day! We appreciate all that the ladies in the cafeteria do to provide us with a nourishing lunch each day!
Next week, fourth grade students will go on their rescheduled field trip to Brethren Woods on Monday. Also, third grade students will be receiving dictionaries from the Rotary Club on Thursday. Fifth grade students will enjoy a visit to MTC on Thursday to learn what classes are offered for them when they get to high school.
We will celebrate UNITY DAY on Wednesday by wearing orange as we encourage kind behavior.
A reminder that the PAC meeting has been moved to October 27, at 6:30. Steve Reid, RCPS Director of Maintenance, will be at JWES to talk about the renovations. Please plan to attend!
Also, parents, if your student has lost a jacket, please have him or her check in our lost and found across from the back gym. We have lots of coats and jackets that have been collected from the playground!
Have a warm and terrific weekend!
Just a reminder that tomorrow, October 14, is an early release day for students. JWES students will be released at 1:00.
We had an amazing Fun Run on September 30th, it was great to see all the fun the kids were having and all the smiling faces. A big "Thank you" to all of you that came out that day to volunteer and help cheer on the kids. The kids loved having the adults running with them.
Thank you to all of you that have sent in your donations for the Fun Run, keep them coming! As of today we have collected $7,877.50. Please remember that we need all donations in by Friday, October 21st to count toward the prizes. Every dollar counts and it all adds up! We are well on our way to meeting the $20,000 Goal for the Fun Run, (and seeing our Principal & Assistant Principal and teacher compete in Relay Races with Ice Buckets at the end). I know this is something that we can do! Please remember that the first $15,000 donated will be matched dollar for dollar thru the challenge grant by the Purdue Foundation.
We need at least $27,000 to finish Phase II of the playground. We have been meeting with the Playground representative and talking about final ideas for the playground. We will be sharing these with the kids soon and letting them help vote on some of the playground features. We have let our rep know that as soon as we have met our goal we want to order the structures so that we can get them installed over Christmas Break. (Hoping that the weather over the Christmas Break will allow this). How exciting would it be to have the kids come back to school to a new playground!
All donations need to be in by Friday, October 21st.
Please include the Donation Form and the money donated in the envelope that was sent home.
Please add your child's name and teacher's name to the outside of the envelope.
All Donations are Tax Deductible
